Schema Theory

Teachers want our students to create new memories. This
straightforward goal requires us to ask: what does a memory
really look like? How do memories connect with each other,
and change over time? Does a student’s memory work like a
teacher’s? Schema theory provides a conceptual answer to all these questions – and organizes the information presented in other workshops. When teachers reconceptualize our goal to be “schema formation,” we can rethink our classroom and curricular work in insightful, essential, and revitalizing ways.

Teachers will learn:

  • A conceptual framework outlining a student’s journey from “novice” to “expert”

  • Common teaching mistakes that result from overlooking this developmental perspective

  • Pedagogical strategies that align with each step along that journey
